Are Candles Safe?

There is a common myth that scented candles for home-fragrance are unsafe, but this is not the case. If made correctly and following IFRA regulations, scented candles should comply with the General Product Safety Regulations in the UK. To ensure safety, select a fragrance that conforms to IFRA certification standards and check the permitted concentration levels. After pouring the candle and curing it, test it for performance and safety, following the standards for fire safety (EN 15493:2019) and sooting behavior (EN 15426:2018).

Additionally, a 2021 study found that paraffin and plant waxes behave similarly in terms of emissions. For fragranced candles, the study found that the concentrations for indoor air were safely met and often well below established safety levels where guide values for emissions were available. Therefore, with proper ingredients and compliance to regulations, home-fragrance candles are a safe choice for enhancing the ambiance of any space.
